At the same time, according to the source, another bridge will be built in the Ungheni region over the Prut River, in Nisporeni.

The new road bridge is to be built in the region of Barboieni (Nisporeni) – Răducăneni (Iași). This bridge will connect the national routes G91 Ungheni – Barboieni – M1, R25 Bucovăț – Nisporeni and the future motorway Cernăuți – Ungheni – Constanța with the road network of Romania and the European Union.

In the same vein, feasibility studies are being carried out on two existing bridges and the construction of two new bridges over the Prut River:

  • Costești (MD, Râșcani) – Stânca (RO, Botoșani)
  • Leova (MD) – Bumbăta (RO, Vaslui)
  • New bridge Leca (MD, Cantemir) – Fălciu (RO, Vaslui)
  • New bridge Barboieni (MD, Nisporeni) – Răducăneni (RO, Iași)

The tendering process for the Ungheni – Ungheni motorway bridge across the Prut is also continuing.

The new deadline for submitting tenders for the construction of the new Ungheni Road Bridge has been set for 31 January 2024

Together with the other bridges at Giurgiulesti (MD) – Galati (RO) (already rehabilitated), Leuseni (MD) – Albița (RO), Sculeni (MD) – Sculeni (RO), Cahul (MD) – Oancea (RO), interconnectivity with Romania and directly with the European Union will be ensured.

The project aims to create a cross-border road sector in these areas to ensure connectivity between Romania and the Republic of Moldova, the tender notice states.

Before the Second World War, no less than 22 bridges were built across the Prut.

Today, there are 10 bridges:

  • 7 stone bridges – auto

  • one pontoon bridge – auto

The 10 bridges across the Prut are located in the vicinity of the following towns:

  1. Lipcani – Rădăuți-Prut (auto)
  2. Costești – Stânca (auto)
  3. Sculeni – Sculeni (auto)

The cost of the investment is 198.21 million ROL, allocated from European funds from the CEF Programme – Connecting Europe Facility 2021-2027 and from the Romanian state budget, allocated through the budget of the Ministry of Transport and Infrastructure, within the limit of the amounts approved annually for this purpose, as well as from other legally established sources, according to the public investment programmes approved by law.

The future bridge between brothers at Ungheni, with a length of 261 meters, includes the installation of a customs post (road) and will connect the Unirii / A8 / Ungheni – Lași – Târgu Mureș motorway.

The execution period is set at 24 months.

The main features foreseen for the new road bridge across the Prut at Ungheni are:

  • 261.20 metres – length of the future road bridge over the Prut at Ungheni
  • 13 metres width of the new bridge (Phase I) + 11.25 m (Phase II)
  • 8 metres width – roadway side of the future road bridge over the Prut at Ungheni
  • 1 km length of road
  • 4 x 3.75 metres – carriageway part of connecting road

The bridge over the Prut at Ungheni is a necessity for both sides of the Prut, whose purpose is to support economic, social and brotherly relations between the two sides.

The new bridge will contribute to the development of road connections with the Republic of Moldova, i.e. to the connectivity of the Republic of Moldova to the European TEN-T transport network, as well as to the fluidity of traffic and optimisation of transport flows, eliminating bottlenecks at border crossing points.

  • Unirii / A8 / Ungheni – Iasi – Targu Mures motorway
  • The future Iasi / Ungheni – Chisinau – Odessa Motorway
  • National road R1 Ungheni – Chisinau
  • National road R16 Ungheni – Fălești – Bălți
  • G91 Ungheni – Barboieni – M1
